Third Annual Oval Meltdown

Eligibility: Open to anyone registered as a Skater with a Club that is a member of a Branch of Speed Skating Canada. Also open to new skaters: simply register as a “Special Event – Competitive” member of Speed Skate Nova Scotia. Age class for the Olympic Style Sprint Championships is determined by the skater’s age ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT.

Sanction: Speed Skate Nova Scotia – Regional Sanction

Safety: The Oval Meltdown is a developmental competition. A minimum of Level 2 crash protection will be provided. Any additional crash protection will depend on the weather cooperating to furnish snowbanks on the corners. It will be at the Chief Referee’s discretion whether skaters with KEF values of .055 and over are permitted to participate in the sprint races.

Mandatory Equipment: For skaters 15 years of age and over, equipment shall conform to D3-200 for Olympic Style racing and to D3-300 with the addition of head protection for Mass Start racing. For skaters under 15 years of age, equipment shall conform to D3-300 and D3-301 for both Olympic Style and Mass Start racing.


  • Mass Start Racing ($10): skaters ages 4 to 104 will be placed in racing groups and assigned four distances based on age, speed, and experience
  • Pursuit and Relay Racing ($5): skaters ages 4 to 104 will be seeded onto pursuit or relay teams: instruction and practice will be provided


  • Sprint races:
    • Olympic Style Sprint Championships ($5 for Novice, $10 for Junior/Senior/Masters)
      • Novice (ages 10-13): 100m & 500m
      • Junior (ages 13-18), Senior (ages 19-29), & Masters (ages 30 & older): 500m & 1000m
    • Sprint Extravaganza ($5)
      • 2 x 100m Olympic Style for skaters 9 & under and beginners of all ages
  • Distance races:
    • ISU Mass Start ($5): skaters ages 4 to 104 will be placed in racing divisions and assigned a distance ranging from 3 laps to 10 laps based on age, speed, and experience
  • Icy Slice Pizza Party & Games (FREE): celebrate together with a slice of pizza!


Registration is online by individual skater. No entries will be accepted after Friday February 9, 2018 at 6pm:

Be sure to provide accurate seed times at the time of registration.

Payment is by club for skaters who belong to Speed Skate Nova Scotia member clubs (an invoice will be emailed to each club once registration closes) and by individual or family for out-of-province skaters and new skaters. Payments can be made by email transfer to or by cheque made out to “The Speedy Kids Oval Program Society” and mailed to Speedy Kids, 80 Victoria Rd, Dartmouth, NS, B3A 1T8. Skaters whose entry fees have not been paid by Tuesday February 13, 2018 at midnight will be removed from the competition.


Saturday February 17th: club check-in at 8am, warmup at 8:30am, and racing starts at 9am

Sunday February 18th: club check-in at 7am, warmup at 7:30am, and racing starts at 8am
